The Labor Party will support the status quo on Central Coast Councillor numbers, says The Entrance MP David Mehan.
The party voted on the weekend to not support the referendum to reduce councillor numbers on Council.
Mr Mehan said the NSW State Conference held at Sydney Town Hall over the weekend endorsed resolutions from Central Coast Labor Party Branches supporting the retention of 15 councillors.
A referendum to be held in conjunction with the elections will ask Central Coast residents to either vote ‘Yes” or ‘No’ to a referendum proposal which asks:
“Do you favour a reduction in the number of Central Coast Councillors from fifteen to nine? This will result in three Wards with each Ward electing three Councillors.”
The referendum proposal was adopted by Council in May, 2021 at the initiative of the interim administrator Dick Persson and the plan to hold the referendum was supported by current administrator RIk Hart.
Mr Mehan said in a press release sent out today that less representation would mean minimal effective outcomes for the community.
“Our community deserves better, and given our growing population, the reduction in Councillors makes no logical sense,” he said.
